Our history

With five generations in the textile industry as our heritage, Pure Cushions’ expertise is in our DNA – and shapes the company we are today.

Our timeline starts back in 1786 with Timothy Bates & Co, the oldest engineering firm in Calderdale, West Yorkshire, which helped Richard Arkwright build his first steam powered factory in Nottingham. Timothy Bates’ grandson – and my great, great, great, great grandfather – Joseph Pollit ran the company until 1862 when he bought the business. Joined by Eustace Wigzell in 1865, the company became Pollit & Wigzell Ltd in 1891, famous for their steam engine innovation, which benefitted a range of industries, including textile mills.
